Demetra Plati

Dr Demetra Valianti Plati is an experienced banking and legal professional with more than 20 years of experience in the financial-services sector. She is Acting Chairwoman and an Independent Non-Executive Director of the Board of Directors of Ancoria Bank.

Dr Plati is the Managing Partner of Complyport Legal, a Nicosia-based law firm specialising in banking and financial-services regulation, regulatory compliance, fintech, payment services, electronic money, digital assets, corporate and commercial law. She advises banks, investment firms, payment institutions, electronic money institutions, crypto-asset service providers, fintech businesses and other regulated entities on legal, regulatory, governance and commercial matters.

Dr Plati joined the Cyprus Bar Association in 2004. Before entering private practice, she spent 16 years with the Association of Cyprus Banks, initially as Internal Legal Adviser and subsequently as Head of Legal Department. In these roles, she worked closely with the Association’s Board of Directors and represented the Cyprus banking sector before the Cyprus Parliament, supervisory authorities and government bodies on significant legal, regulatory and policy matters.

Her experience covers major developments affecting the Cyprus banking sector, including harmonisation with the EU acquis, Cyprus’s adoption of the euro, the global financial crisis, bank resolution and bail-in measures, the Memorandum of Understanding with the Troika, and COVID-19-related regulatory measures. She participated in the technical committee with Troika representatives involved in drafting the new insolvency framework and the securitisation and sale-of-loans legislation. She also led work relating to the introduction of e-auctions for mortgaged property and, during the COVID-19 crisis, worked closely with the Chairman of the Association of Cyprus Banks on payment-moratorium and government-guarantee measures.

Dr Plati was a member of the Legal Committee of the European Banking Federation for 16 years and served for 11 years on the Central Information Register for Issuers of Dishonoured Cheques.

Alongside her legal and board responsibilities, Dr Plati has taught Banking Law at the University of Nicosia and is a visiting lecturer at the European Institute of Management and Finance and the London Governance and Compliance Academy.

Education: Demetra holds a PhD in Banking Law and an LLB from the University of Bristol. She is a member of the Cyprus Bar Association and a certified Nominated Advisor (NOMAD) of the Cyprus Securities Stock Exchange.
