Demetra Plati

Demetra is an experienced banking and legal professional having worked in the industry for 19 years. Since 2021 she is a partner at the Nicosia based boutique Law firm Plati, Parparinos & Associates LLC, which specialises in financial services law, regulatory compliance, and commercial law. She joined the Cyprus Bar Association in 2004. Since October 2004 she worked for 18 years with the Association of Cyprus Banks initially holding the position of internal legal advisor and subsequently as Head of Legal Department, representing banks in Parliament, Supervisors, and the government. She worked closely with the Board of Directors of the Association, advising on major legal topics and regulatory challenges faced by the local banking sector including all its milestones, from the harmonization with the acquis, the transposition to the EURO, the global financial crisis, the Bail-in, the MOU with the Troika to the COVID-19 crisis. She participated in the technical committee with the Troika Representatives, which drafted the New Insolvency Framework, and the Securitisation and Sale of Loans Laws and led the introduction of e-auctions for mortgaged property and during the recent COVID-19 crisis, worked closely with the Chairman of the Board on payment moratoria and governmental guarantees. She was a member of the Legal Committee of the European Banking Federation for 16 years and a member of the Central Information Register for the Issuers of Dishonoured Cheques for 11 years. She has taught Banking Law the University of Nicosia and is a visiting lecturer at the European Institute of Management and Finance and the London Governance and Compliance Academy.

Education: Demetra holds a PhD in Banking Law from the University of Bristol and an LLB again from the University of Bristol. She is a member of the Cyprus Bar Association and a certified Nominated Advisor (NOMAD) of the Cyprus Securities Stock Exchange.
